Crooked / Crossed Beaks

Hi Gina,

My husband, Fred and I, just purchased 25 Rhode Island Reds and 8 Americanas. They are now 4 weeks old.

The problem is one of the Americanas beak is not aligned properly. It appears his jaw is dislocated. The vet has no answer for the problem. He is eating and drinking and appears to be other wise healthy, but smaller than the rest. I am afraid that as he gets older he may not be able to eat the harder food.

Do you or any of your readers have any suggestions as to how to deal with this issue?

Thanks so much for your newsletter and website, we refer to it often.

Alana

I recently received the above email from a subscriber. The problem with crossed or crooked beaks is fairly common (as far as birth defects go). In some chicks it is immediately apparent - in others it comes on gradually over a few months.
