You may remember that in last month one of the 'subscriber coops' was from Lisa Silver Frankel. I have received an interesting update from Lisa about a recent hatching attempt.

"About one and a half months ago, we numbered with pencil, 7 eggs for our chickens to try and hatch. Rather than incubate the chicks ourselves, we felt that surely Mother Nature could handle the propagation of this species without human intervention. Although each hen would frequent this particular busy cubby to deposit a new egg, only one hen possessed any kind of maternal instincts. As it turned out, our smallest hen, Prissy, a blue silkie sat on the eggs diligently for two weeks straight, leaving her post only for moments to gulp water or peck a few morsels fallen close to her nest. Since the temperature still plummets to below freezing at times, when I saw Prissy abandon her post for more than a few hours, I assumed all hope for chicks lost.
