November 2008

Linda and Neil Brunner : I am sending a picture of our Salmon Favorelle flock with our rooster Fawkes. They number 19 with Fawkes. They are about 4 and a half months old here. We are in rural Missouri, USA. We got them as chicks late in the spring. We mix our feed; it being primarily rolled oats, some cracked corn, wheat berries, garlic powder, Redmond minerals, and a bit of kelp, barley, millet or whatever we happen to have at the time. They also range for a bit each day and get an evening clump of worms out of our compost bin and a pile of fresh comfrey leaf. So far so good. We are holding our breath for the first egg.

My husband and our friend Mike added the coop onto our barn. It is bank robber safe. I imagine the snakes will come calling next year though.

Fawkes by the way, is named after Dumbledore's phoenix in Harry Potter. They are all terribly sweet and fun to raise and we enjoy the heck out of them.

We are the proud parents of "OUR FIRST EGG". Our hens started laying last weekend, and now we have enough for Sunday breakfast! Yes, sorry, we do eat our young (but not the parents). The eggs are from our Americaunas. They are small but we think our egg is a work of art. We share it proudly with you!
