November 2008

Not knowing a whole lot about chickens and their temperaments, my husband's uncle gave us five more birds last September. Wow, two distinct camps were formed immediately and it took a bit for them to reestablish the pecking order. But things finally calmed down and they all got to the business of being chickens and laying eggs with Lucy still holding her queen status.

I've attached a few pictures of our girls' coop. They seem very happy and healthy and don't seem to mind the bit of humour when I painted a sign and hung it by the door. With winter coming and the nights getting down into the twenties, I'll now re-hang a heat lamp and sometime this month we'll also re-hang our panels over the screens to keep out the cold. I know I'll always have chickens and wish that I would have done this years ago! You can't beat the fresh eggs!

Thanks again, Gina, for providing such a friendly atmosphere and great newsletter for all of us chicken lovers!
