Hi Gina!
I have to tell you how much
I enjoy the newsletter! I have learned so much about raising chickens
and have also discovered that there are so many others just like
me who are just as 'chicken crazy' as I am!
I wanted to tell you all about
the strange incident that happened at my house two years ago and
the how and why of my family becoming chicken lovers! So...in
most incidences, people have a stray dog or cat that shows up
at their home. Not us. Of all things, a stray chicken showed up
a year ago last March! I'm not kidding you. We live in the country
and there isn't even a home close by that is raising chickens
so this little girl must have gone on a long trek through the
woods to reach us. My husband and I weren't home and our daughter
called us on the cell to let us know there was a chicken in the
yard. We laughed and said sure thing. Turns out she was right!
We think the chicken may have been around our yard for a while
simply because our yellow lab hunting dog and our little Pomeranian
just walked around the yard with it as if they were all great
buds. Neither dog ever ruffled a feather on that bird. This chicken
had decided to take up residence in the garage and we discovered
she was subsisting on the deer feed, corn and oats. (We feed a
herd of deer in the winter.) Now, my hubby is pretty laid back,
but he and that chicken went round and round (of course, my daughter
and I wouldn't let him kill it!) Every time the garage door was
open, the chicken made a beeline for a rafter where no one could
get to her.
