February 2009

Fawkes with some of his harem of 18

Linda and Neil Brunner : At present, February of 2009, the girls are laying about a dozen wonderful eggs a day give or take a few. We are hand mixing rolled oats with a few whole oats, cracked corn, no chems wheat berries and ground minerals along with garlic powder. This in addition to their oyster shell and gravel and warm water and mixed greens/veggies several times a day.

We started using a heating lamp suspended high on cold nights after Fawkes had his comb lightly frosted this winter. We had unexpectedly low temps and got caught off guard. That won't happen again!

The eggs are medium sized and a lovely latte color with some speckles.

The flock has a varmint tight outdoor run for good days and free ranges with supervision (due to our occasional roaming dogs) when we are home. We now have several hens acting broody which is what we had hoped for and is actually one of the reasons we chose Salmon Favorelles so it won't be long and we will be accommodating for that.
