February 2009

Carl & Sal : We had one of our hens go broody before Christmas, we left seven eggs under her and marked them with a marker pen so any laid a few days after she went broody we removed.

Dogs and chickens on Christmas day : they were all sampling the Turkey - the hens usually get to the goodies first.

One of the eggs hatched on the 6th of January and it was bitterly cold, the mother (Frau Hendl) didn't bring the chick out until the 8th Jan. We had just bought an infrared lamp the previous day and wanted to try and hatch out any more eggs left in the nest so when we went to remove the abandoned eggs we found what I thought was a dead chick, it must have just hatched, it was wet and cold and I picked it up by the leg and left it on the ground while cleaning out the nest. We thought we saw its beak move and watched for a few seconds and it moved again so we rushed it into the shed and put it under the infrared lamp over the next half an hour Sally massaged it until it was moving about a little more.
